Hurricane watch - Belize has been discontinued

Belmopan, September 4, 2007- The hurricane watch for the country of Belize has been discontinued, but a tropical storm watch remains in effect for southern Belize from Independence Village southwards.

At 9:00 am this morning Hurricane Felix was moving westward over eastern Honduras as a Category Three hurricane and weakening. The only threat this system poses to Belize at this time will be in the form of torrential rainfall and possible flooding over the Toledo and southern Stann Creek Districts.

NEMO has therefore declared the “all clear” for the country of Belize with effect from mid-day today, except for that area in the south where the tropical storm watch remains in effect.

At a meeting of NEMO this morning, chaired by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Said Musa, it was decided that the State of Emergency for the country of Belize be lifted with effect from 12 noon today.

Persons who have sought refuge in shelters may now return to their homes; however, shelters will remain open in the southern areas of Belize as the threat of torrential rains and widespread flooding remains possible in the tropical storm watch area.

With the declaration of the “all clear”, conditions around the country return to normal. Public Officers are required to report back to work today. All schools should also resume classes, except for Primary Schools, which remain closed until Tuesday, September 11th 2007. Businesses and elements of the private sector who had been on hurricane alert can return to their normal routine.

Hurricane Felix Advisory #1

September 3, 2007- All Mariners are advised to be aware of the threat being posed by Hurricane Felix and to stay tuned to the latest updates. Mariners are also being informed that on the declaration of the Preliminary Phase, they are to seek safe anchorage to ride out the storm.

Those mariners in the vicinity of the Belize City Harbour, namely at the Princess, Swing Bridge and Radisson Marinas are further advised to listen to the radio for information regarding the swinging of the Swing Bridge and the Belcan Bridge to facilitate passage up the Haulover Creek for safer mooring.

On the declaration of the Preliminary Phase, all vessels in the Belize City Harbour must be moved to a safe anchorage. In the event that an owner fails to move his/her vessel, the Belize Port Authority will move it at the owner’s risk and expense.

Reports coming in!!

We have been getting reports of people doing well, (as well as can be expected) post Dean. Keep thise reposrts comming in, we are ALL glad that is looks like we are doing better than expected!

San Pedro is resting easier this morning

San Pedro is resting easier this morning as Hurricane Dean has passed over. Winds were very strong, the water came up quite a bit on the lagoon side, flooding some streets, but damage is limited to docks and debris, there are no major personal injuries.
Over 10,000 people were evacuated from Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker prior to the storm, and about 2,000 remained in shelter for the duration of the hurricane. Intense wave, wind, and rain began late last night and continued til early this morning.

The eye of the storm made landfall near Majahual, a popular port with cruise liners, located about 56 kilometres northeast of Chetumal and the Belize border, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Dean packed winds near 270 km/h and was moving west-northwest near 32 km/h across the Yucatan peninsula, on course to reach by Tuesday evening the southern Bay of Campeche, where state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos decided Monday to shut down production on the offshore rigs that extract most of the nation’s oil.

The hurricane has killed at least 12 people across the Caribbean, picked up strength after brushing Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and became a monstrous Category 5 hurricane Monday.

Category 5 storms — capable of catastrophic damage — are extremely rare. Only three have hit the U.S. since 1935.
